Remembering Metta

For many years, Metta Callahan, our friend and neighbor, was a volunteer Family Advocate with Young Rhinebeck (now CultureConnect). She worked with families with limited English skills, facilitating communication between parents and teachers, to help them better navigate the school process. She had a tremendous impact on these families and on the entire Latino community in Rhinebeck.
In the months before she passed away, Metta was talking with us about expanding our Family Advocacy program to help with the college admissions process. While this can be difficult for any student, the transition from high school to college is especially challenging for first or second generation Americans.  Over time, we will work to fulfill her vision by broadening our Family Advocacy program to include college counseling and other support for English language learners and their families.
CultureConnect is heartened by the many donations we have received in Metta's memory and we extend our sincere thanks to all of those who have honored her in this way.

mission

CultureConnect prepares youth to interact
with their local and global communities
with intelligence, compassion and cultural competence.

We envision a world in which young people engage their world
with sound academic and intellectual abilities, a sense of citizenry
and ethics, and the wisdom that comes from hands-on experience
in cultural competence and compassion.

We do this by providing youth with opportunities, resources, and skills to:

Help strengthen a belief in their own self worth and determination
Better prepare them for school and productive work
Connect with other youth, their local community, and beyond.

ArtsConnect

ArtConnect is an after-school or weekend program for middle schoolers in Rhinebeck.  It gives students the opportunity to experience various types of art in atypical ways in order to enhance their opportunities to understand themselves and others.  Art allows us to learn about other people and cultures; the values and beliefs that shape the artist's vision and their ideas of what is beautiful.

Past ArtConnect activities have included "Night at the Museum, in partnership with Bard College and the Hessel Museum".  Students explored and discussed the current exhibit, created their own exhibit-inspired artwork, and then spent the night at the museum!

MadagascarConnect

CultureConnect is proud to offer a once in a lifetime opportunity for high school juniors and seniors.  Selected applicants will plan and execute fundraising activities, take part in intensive extra-curricular education about Madagascar, fly to Madagascar and participate in a series of life changing events, and return to the Hudson Valley to share their experience with other.  While in Madagascar they will dive into theatre performances with Malagasy students their age, participate in research and work with local Malagasy artists.

These ambassadors will participate in both educational and culturally relevant activities with the goal of creating more globally aware students, both in Madagascar and at home.  CultureConnect is fortunate to work with SUNY Stony Brook, Zara Aina and Sunshine Comes First on this exciting endeavor.
